How Reiki Differs From Massage

In states that do not explicitly exempt Reiki from jurisdiction by the Massage Board, Reiki sometimes raises the ire of people who would prefer to have it regulated. Reasons can range from conservative religious groups looking for ways to minimize the proliferation of alternative spirituality, to massage therapists wanting to eliminate competition from those with less formal training, to a misunderstanding of what Reiki actually is. I offer this article as a starting point for people trying to understand the differences between Reiki and Massage.

This list also serves as a starting point for anyone creating a petition targeted to a particular state's definition of massage. (Be sure to check your state's actual definition when writing such a petition.) In a world of increased regulation, it's important to practice Reiki both responsibly and freely.

The "Rei" in Reiki stands for "universal" or" spiritual," and the "ki" corresponds to the "life force energy" known as "Chi" or "prana" in other Eastern systems of healing and energy work such as feng shui, Tai Chi, Qigong, or yoga. Thus, Reiki refers to "universal life force energy," "divinely directed healing energy," or "life energy of a spiritual nature," with an emphasis on subtle energy fields rather than the physical body. For the following reasons, we do not believe Reiki fits the legal definition of massage:

1) Massage is primarily physical, but Reiki works with subtle energy fields surrounding the body. Although some massage therapists may draw upon Reiki energy while giving massages, a traditional Reiki treatment involves 11 to 14 stationary, non-pressured hand positions held for 3 to 5 minutes each. Whereas massage involves the manipulation of tissue, Reiki requires only a light, non-invasive touch or no touch at all. Reiki Level 2 students learn how to perform Reiki treatments at a distance without requiring someone's physical proximity, but it would be impossible to give a massage without a body in the same room. Reiki is akin to "the spiritual laying on of hands" or "healing prayer," rather than a massage modality or technique.

2) In order to provide effective massage, massage therapists need knowledge of anatomy and physiology, along with various massage strokes like "Effleurage," "Petrissage," "Tapotement," etc. By contrast, Reiki students learn that universal life force energy has innate intelligence and knows where it needs to go. Reiki practitioners do not manipulate the body or forcefully direct energy during a Reiki treatment. In order to practice Reiki, the practitioners must receive an attunement or initiation from a Certified Reiki Master Teacher. The attunement opens the students' own natural energy channels, allowing Reiki energy to flow through their hands. The traditional Reiki hand positions and any other Reiki process do not require massage education in order to be effective.

3) In addition to the aforementioned differences, preparations for receiving Reiki or massage are different. Before receiving a massage, most patients disrobe and then have lotions rubbed into their nude or semi-nude body, draped under a sheet. By contrast, recipients of Reiki always remain clothed, and Reiki treatments do not involve the use of lotions or crèmes.

4) The American Cancer Association makes a distinction between massage and Reiki when recommending complementary therapies. According to the ACA, "Manipulation of a bone in an area of cancer metastasis could result in a bone fracture. Also, people who have had radiation may find even light touch on the treatment area to be uncomfortable. ... People receiving radiation treatment should not have lotion or oil used on the areas on which radiation was used. Even without radiation treatment, a few people have allergic reactions to oils used during massage. ... Another concern for people with cancer is that tissue manipulation in the area of a tumor might increase the risk that cancer cells might travel to other parts of the body. It may be prudent for cancer patients to avoid massage near tumors and lumps that may be cancerous until this question is clearly answered." By contrast, the ACA considers Reiki a "safe" treatment for cancer patients, noting that "Reiki involves very light touch or no touch."

5) The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) at the National Institutes of Health lists Reiki under "Energy Therapies", which are "intended to affect the energy fields that surround and penetrate the human body." As defined by the NCCAM, "Reiki is based on the belief that by channeling spiritual energy through the practitioner, the spirit is healed, and it in turn heals the physical body." Massage is listed under a distinctly separate category, namely, the "Manipulative and Body-Based Methods", which NCCAM defines as "methods that are based on manipulation and/or movement of the body", wherein "massage therapists manipulate the soft tissues of the body to normalize those tissues."

6) At least twenty U.S. states explicitly exempt Reiki from massage regulation.

Energy Healing and Holistic Well-Being

Even though energy healing has been around for thousands of years, holistic clinics as well as modern hospitals have just begun to look at this "new" method of treating people in a natural and drug-free manner.

If you are suffering from a chronic disease, you're likely looking for options to help you feel better. Energy medicine is one of the safest and most gentle treatment systems that can help you either manage your chronic illness or cure it entirely. Not only is your system going to be rebalanced properly through energy work, you may also find a resurgence of hope, energy, and a new zest for living.

Energy Healing - The New Alternative Therapy For Wellness

The idea behind energy techniques is that the body is made up of an energy field that can be influenced by universal energy and other energy fields surrounding it. Human energy fields, better known as auras, include the physical, emotional and astral fields. You also have seven energy centers in your body known as "chakras." A body is considered healthy when all the chakras are balanced harmoniously.

The holistic practitioner uses healing spiritual energy to rebalance and harmonize your individual energy centers. Any energy blocks within the body are also released.

Practitioners use different types of energy approaches like Reiki, Healing Touch, Pranic Healing, as well as Quantum Touch to treat various ailments like depression and chronic pain.

More on the Bounty of Energetic Healing...

- Vibrational healing is a complementary alternative to modern medical treatments, with no side effects.

- It can help patients control pain in a soothing manner.

- You will feel increased energy, tranquility and peace after experiencing this type of quantum healing therapy.

Three Powerful and Popular Healing Approaches:

Reiki - Reiki therapy originated from Japan and is practiced by using various hand placements on and off your body. Healing "chi" (or energy) is directed out of the palms of the practitioner's hands. Reiki is used for pain reduction, complementary therapy for major illnesses and for emotional issues.

Pranic Healing - Similar to Healing Touch and Reiki, Pranic Healing practitioners cleanse the aura using a hands-off, sweeping method. They then direct healing energy to recharge the aura.

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) - This method of New Age healing is done by tapping the tips of the fingers at key energy points along the body. This is accompanied by bringing the problem to the fore of the mind so that it can be dealt with both physically and emotionally.

Scientific data may not be able to prove that any of these techniques are helpful - yet. But people all over the world, for thousands of years have benefited from energy healing. Experiment with these therapies to find the best combination for your mind, body, and soul's healthful evolution!

All About Crystal Healing Reiki

Reiki treatment is considered a form of spiritual energy healing, which is believed to be guided by the vast intelligence of the universe, or Universal Life Force, that which we have come to know as the mind of God.

Crystal Healing Reiki is widely used by many Reiki healers. Their use aids in the balancing of energy within the body which in turn helps in the therapeutic process. Reiki practitioners use crystals because they can speed up the healing.

The purpose behind laying crystals or gemstones is basically to aid in the releasing of physical, emotional, spiritual or mental blocks. It is believed that negative experiences, both physical and emotional, can cause blocks in the energy paths which in turn bring about disease.

The gemstones are laid on specific points of the body where the chakras or energy centers are located. The practitioner's role is to be comforting, non-judgemental, and supportive making the patient feel "safe" in case he feels the need to release his emotions verbally. In many instances, the healing begins once the patient feels the freedom to express himself. This is an integral part of the healing process.

Reiki healers seem to have a preference for quartz, since it is a clear and harmonically shaped crystal, which properties apparently clear the blockages within the body. However, since chakras are associated with colors according to the energy fields they represent, many practitioners will take this into consideration when choosing the crystals to be used during treatment.

It is believed that these crystals have unique vibrational energies connected to their color and shape. This seems to help in the balancing, realigning and amplifying of energy fields within the body. It is important to always use a stone that feels good to the patient when placed on his body. If any discomfort is felt, the crystal should be removed at once. A variety of stones can be used and interchanged during treatment, and once the patient has 'absorbed' the energy from one stone, it should be removed. For this to be effective, the practitioner and the client must work closely together during this process.

The gemstones should be cleaned and kept in optimal conditions so they keep their energetic properties. Thus, after treatment the gems should be placed in salt water, and some Masters recharge them through specific techniques.

The following are some of the crystals used for Crystal Healing Reiki:

For the pelvic area, onyx, garnet and ruby can be used. The colors that represent these chakras are brown, black and red.

For the abdominal area, tiger's eye, quartz and amber are used. The color associated to this area is gold.
For the Third Eye or forehead, moss agate, amethyst and sodalite are indicated. The colors of this area are dark blue and purple.

For the throat area, turquoise, aquamarine and amazonite are indicated. The colors associated with this area are light blue or blue green.

For the crown or top of the head, quartz is used. The color of this stone is clear white.

For the heart area, pink tourmaline, rose quartz, rhodonite, aventurine, and green tourmaline can be used. And the colors associated are pink and green.

For the solar plexus, stones like malachite, peridot, rhodochrosite and moonstone can be used. The colors of this area are coral and chartreuse.

Reiki Psychic Attunement Explained

What is meant by Reiki psychic attunement? How does it happen? How is it done? These are just a few questions that go through the mind of those who first learn about this ancient healing art and its relationship to psychic abilities. This article will shed some light that will help answer those questions.

A Simple Explanation

Let's start by explaining what an attunement is. The word attunement comes from "in tune" and this refers to manipulating the energy to fine-tune or bring into balance the patient's spirit, emotions, feelings, mental processes, and physical body to create synchrony within and oneness with Life Force as a whole.

This procedure may also help in the opening and expanding of the patient's innate psychic abilities. Some advocates of Reiki emphasize that it assists in clearing the concerns that tend to clog the spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical bodies which are the cause of turmoil and disease. Moreover, the attunement process brings about the healing energies from the Life Force Energy into the being.

Although Life Force Energy is around us at all times, not every person can easily access and absorb it into their system because if the chakras are out of balance, the blocks prevent the energy to be absorbed and utilized properly.

During the course of the attunement process, all of the metaphysical and universal laws as well as the Law of Similarity and the Law of Correspondence are called for. The Law of Similarity states that if a person, object, event or condition bears any resemblance or similarity -like color, shape, action, etc.- to those of the patient, it can be used for healing purposes as if it were the person or condition itself. And the Law of Correspondence states that every component of a system retains its own characteristics but also takes on the characteristics of the system as a whole, much like a holographic image in which each piece is composed of the total sum of its parts.

These concepts are widely used in distant healing, for example, a photo of the patient is similar to and corresponds to the patient himself.

Besides Usui Reiki, other modalities like Tibetan and Karuna Reiki are used by many Masters to perform distance healing with symbols. This aids in sending the energy across space and time. As a general rule, the experience that is present when the attunement is performed requires no body of belief, faith or religion for it to work. Also, one attunement can last for a lifetime or several may be needed according to each individual circumstance.

Reiki and Psychic Ability - Clearing the Misconception

The name psychic attunement is often utilized to describe the process when a Reiki student or patient is being harmonized with Reiki Energy. It's important to make clear that while Reiki may awaken psychic abilities in the receiver, the Reiki Energy, the attunement itself or Reiki practice as a whole is not in any way a psychic phenomena since the practitioner does not make use of his mind's power in the treatment session. Simply put, Reiki is often compared to ESP, telepathy, and mind reading, but it is something quite different in concept and execution.

The term 'psychic' tends to be associated to horoscopes, divination, future tellers, and even the obscure, but this association doesn't reflect the truth. The word psychic comes from a Greek root that means "the mind of the soul." It basically refers to the perception of information without the use of the readily available and well known five senses. In this sense, we are all psychic, even though some of us may have our psychic sense more or less developed than others.

On the other hand, Reiki is the word used in describing the Life Force Energy that encompasses every living creature. "Life force" may exist through different terms and names in various cultures and countries but the entire concept remains the same: it's the energy that encompasses all.

Thus, the practitioners of Reiki are not in any way psychic, so to say. They are people who have gone through rigorous training in expanding their knowledge about life and Life Force Energy in general. They have also learned how the human physical body works from the physiological standpoint, as well as how it responds to the energy around.

Therefore, even though people refer to Reiki treatment as Reiki psychic attunement, it is important to understand that it does not fall under the category called psychic phenomena. During an attunement session, the healer senses the illness or pain when they feel warmth or vibration over one area of the patient's body while they touch or pass their hands over it. Through the attunement they can readily channel Life Force Energy to the ill area to aid in the balance of energy of that particular region, organ or system.

This in turn brings about healing. All the energy channeling is done just with the use of their bare hands, and no psychic phenomena takes place.

Not too long ago, Western Medicine was reluctant to accept Reiki as a valuable means to restore health. Fortunately, as time passes and results become impossible to deny, Reiki therapy is gaining popularity and rapidly becoming a more accepted source as an alternative methodology of complementary medicine. Reiki is also being referred to as "Energy Medicine" or "Healing Touch Medicine." After all, the power of touch has proved helpful and effective many times and with several conditions, which will only continue to aid in the recognizing and accepting Reiki as a real and valuable healing method.

The Reiki Symbols Revealed

There are several Reiki symbols but most Reiki modalities use just four. Symbols are thought to possess a unique vibrational energy that helps facilitate the Reiki treatment. When they first were discovered and introduced to the Reiki practice, the symbols did not have names. They were simply called by numbers, from one to four. However, since each one of them conveys a specific purpose, they were given names.

The first symbol is called Cho Ku Rei and it is considered the Power Symbol. This means that during Reiki treatment the power of the universe is called upon to aid in the healing. Its literary translation is "place all the power of the universe right here." Through this symbol, the Reiki Master is able to draw energy from the source and then he can focus on where he wants it to go.

This power symbol can be used to cleanse negative energies, to invoke spiritual protection, for treatment directed to one specific spot or organ, and to help in manifesting desires. It is also used to seal the energies of the other three symbols and even to make them more powerful. For this reason, this symbol is used at the end of the treatment so as to give it a golden seal.

The second symbol is called Sei Hei Ki, is the Mental & Emotional symbol. As is name implies it, this symbol is used to help those who are afflicted by emotional pain and/or mental turmoil.

The literal translation of this symbol means "God and Humanity Are One." It is believed that this symbol helps activate the Kundalini, a corporeal energy located in the base of the spine. This energy also awakens during yoga and meditation creating balance between left and right hemispheres of the brain. This brings harmony, peace, and a sense of expanded consciousness. It also aids in the cleansing process, improves memory, clears energy blockages and aligns the chakras. It also provides psychic protection and eliminates negative vibrations.

The third symbol is called Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen which translates into "Distant Symbol". As the meaning implies, this symbol is used for distance healing. The symbol enables the Reiki channel to open and deliver the Reiki at a distance, and even send it to the past or the future.

This symbol represents a combination of the five kanji or Japanese characters meaning: source, being, just, certainty and thought. The symbol also represents a Buddhist chant for right consciousness as the root of everything.

The fourth symbol is known as Dai Ko Myo and this is used to initiate the student to the awareness of Reiki degrees. This is considered to be the most powerful symbol and can only be used by Reiki Masters. This is why this symbol is not introduced until Level Three training.

This symbol is powerful because it is used to heal the soul. It relates to the patient's spiritual being. That which has created the body, heals the body; thus, with the aid of this symbol a disease or illness can be cured. The healing starts at the source and goes through the individual energy field or aura. This symbol is also used to provide enlightenment and peace. This means that the patient can become more intuitive and even psychic.

There is another symbol that is less used but worth mentioning. It is called Tama Ra Sha, and many consider it the fourth symbol leaving Dai Ko Myo in the fifth symbol position. It is used to balance, unblock and ground energy.

The number and position of the Reiki symbols is not as important as to their meaning and the way in which each can be used. Each of the symbols can be activated in several ways. First, they can be drawn in the palm of your hand. Second, they can be visualized. Third, they can be spelled or called out loud three times each. Then they can be placed or drawn on the patient's chakras, oh their hands or on the area to be treated.

It is for these reasons that it is essential to learn the symbols by heart, so you can draw them correctly to harness their energy. You will be provided with precise drawings of the symbols as well as learn how and when to use each when you decide to become a Reiki Master yourself.

And now that the Reiki symbols have been revealed, you can begin using them. Just remember that no matter how you use them, it is the intention is that matters.
