Understanding the History of Reiki and Its Many Benefits

Reiki healing is growing in popularity around the Western world. The word "Reiki" is Japanese and means "Universal Life Energy." A Japanese theologian named Dr. Mikao Usui founded the Reiki healing system at the end of the last century. He discovered the ancient healing system after studying Sanskrit texts in a Buddhist monastery. Though the texts revealed the knowledge needed, Dr. Usui still had to undergo three weeks of fasting and meditation before receiving the healing empowerment of the Reiki system. An American woman named Hawayo Takata brought the Reiki system to the Western world. Takata was cured of a tumor at a Reiki clinic in Japan, and then totally dedicated her life to Reiki. She was trained by a Japanese master named Dr. Chujiro Hayashi. During her life, Takata created 22 Reiki Masters to carry on the methods. Channeling Healing Energy Reiki is best known for being used as a channel for energy to provide a safe healing method. It promotes good health and well being and can be experienced by people of all ages, whether in good health or stricken by illness. By replenishing a person's life force energy, their body's immune system can be strengthened. This helps the body in its fight against disease. A Reiki healer channels energy to a welcoming receiver. The person receiving Reiki experiences a warm, relaxing feeling in their soul, mind and body. The experience is just as much spiritual as it is physical. Benefits of Reiki Reiki healing offers many benefits. It is often used for stress management and to help the body fight and prevent sickness. As Reiki energy is channeled to an individual, they can relax and relieve their stress. This helps the person feel better and think more clearly. The more Reiki energy they can receive, the better they will feel. When a sick or stress-prone person receives Reiki, their body becomes free to help itself become healthier than ever. Other benefits of Reiki include healed relationships, finding one's Divine Purpose, manifesting life goals, awakening the healer within, cleansing the body from toxins, enhancing creativity, and many others. To offer so many benefits, Reiki is surprisingly gentle and nurturing. It is not a harsh medical treatment, but can be far more powerful for the individual who opens their mind, heart and soul to the process wholly and freely. How it Works After an initiation to Reiki, called Reiki Attunement, and learning about Reiki symbols, the individual is introduced to Reiki energy through several methods, including crystals and crystal healing, drumming healing, meditations, and other stress management techniques. Even many modern chiropractors, psychotherapists, medical doctors, psychologists and other medical professionals are beginning to realize the benefits of Reiki. More and more people are tapping into Reiki energy to experience a fuller, healthier life.

Reiki Hands - The Magic of Healing, Health and Vitality

The art of healing (through Reiki or any other form) is nothing new. Every mother has the instinct to reach out to her crying child and soothe it with her hands, seeking out the discomfort with stroking, holding, touching, loving and closeness.

Many forms of healing have evolved and are presented to people on different levels according to the need of the time. Early systems used herbs, ritual, invocation and retreat to call upon the spirit to become one again with the person needing healing.

Highly intelligent systems were created as an holistic science of body/mind/spirit and put into a practical form by people such as the ancient Indian Rishis (The Vedas), the Essenes (The Dead Sea Scrolls), the Egyptians (Nay Hammadi Texts), Native American Shamans (oral tradition), Early Greeks (mythology), Christians (the Bible), Muslims (the Qur'an); there are also records of the systems of the Knights Templar and the Free Masons. These forms were originally so that the people could practice and learn.

Most holistic healing systems rely on several things:

1. the willingness of the receiver/student to receive

2. the presence of a system of knowledge to reconnect the receiver to the quantum field, or Universal Spirit, that is to say, knowledge of God through practice of the Form

3. the balance of Chi

4. the experience and compassion of the healer to step aside allowing self-empowerment through self-referral, self-knowledge and trust

5. the shift of focus from Self to Source

6. Divine Grace.

The origins of Reiki have been traced back to Buddhist Sanskrit Scriptures. It is believed that the early forms were used by Buddhist monks in a different way from today, as part of their intricate system of prayer, invocation, ritual and surrender needed for life as a monk, most probably limited to self-treatment.

It was a completely Holy focus: a self addressing hands-on system to change the flow of Chi energy in the body to become of a more Divine nature, holding the body and mind still with the hands while the focus remained on the inner coursing of the Chi.

In 1979 a silk book was unearthed in China that dates from as early as 206 BC. It is called Dao Ying Qi Fa - Method of Inducing Free Flow of Chi. It contains 44 drawings of Chi Gong postures, some of which were an essential part of the training in the Shaolin Temple in Henan. It is believed that the Art of Reiki was a form of Chi Gong adapted and incorporated into the way of Buddhist Temple practice.

Eight Reiki Marketing Tips For Getting More Clients

Here are some Quick-Killer Methods for Increasing Your Reiki Business:

1. When you make your first sale, follow-up with the customer. You could follow-up with a "thank you" email and include an advertisement for other Products/Services/Classes you sell. You could follow-up every few months.

2. You could upsell to your customers. When they're at your order page, or signing up for a class/Session…tell them about a few extra related Products/Services that you have Available. They could just add it to their original order.

3. Tell your customers if they refer four paying customers to you, they will receive a free Service/Product. This will turn one sale into three sales.

4. When you sell a product, give your customers the option of joining an affiliate program so they can make commissions selling your Product. This will multiply the sale you just made. This is great if you will be selling manuals or ebooks over the internet.

5. A simple and Effective way to market your Reiki Practice is to offer an Article to people visiting your open house or Health Expo Booth. Include your contact information on the article, so that they can contact you after they have finished reading the article.

6. Collaborate with Others
More than likely, you will reach various times when you do not have the appropriate expertise to accomplish something.
This is the time collaboration and/or networking is valuable. These relationships can help you answer questions, provide guidance, and provide the ongoing
support and encouragement you will need.

7. Customer Relations
Keep your line of communication open with your customers. If they have a problem, show them the deserved respect and resolve the issue quickly. Make occasional phone calls to see if they have any needs.
This will let your customers know that you are there for them and care about their business. This relationship is what is going to keep you on the road to success. After all, the customer is your link between failure and success.

8. Repositioning and Reflection
On occasion, reflect on what you have accomplished as well as your open milestones and ensure you are still heading in the right direction.
Repositioning along the way to success is perfectly normal and to be expected. You may have been struggling with something specific.
Rather than continue battling this issue, reflect on what has not been working, and reposition yourself so you do not have to keep battling the same things repeatedly.

A Quick Guide to Stress Management with Reiki

Stress is overwhelmingly affecting people in our society today. Busy with work, home, family, and many other daily tasks - stress piles on without our realizing it. That's why so many people are turning to the stress-reducing techniques used in Reiki, a spiritual energy used with healing, meditation and spiritual growth. Introduction to Reiki When a person is introduced to Reiki, an initiation takes place called "Reiki Attunement." This brings the person into a relationship with Reiki energy, and is usually activated by a trained Reiki master-teacher. During a Reiki Attunement, the person's dense energy is cleared and released, and etheric and chakras fields are strengthened so the person will be able to receive and transmit high frequency healing light. The person can become familiar with Reiki healing and Reiki symbols as well. Learning to Relax Stress usually takes over when a person is fearful, doubtful, or full of worry about things that are happening around them. The person often lives in a constant tense state without realizing what is happening. The body naturally reacts with fatigue, moodiness and sometimes, disease. To relieve stress, one must learn to relax and overcome the fears and worries of everyday life. Reiki helps a person to relieve the emotional and physical strain of stress and to restore balance to the body, soul and mind. The person can return to a relaxed, peaceful state of being by clearing energy bodies and unblocking meridians, chakras and nadas. Methods of Stress Reduction and Elimination There are several methods used in Reiki to reduce and eliminate stress. One method is crystal healing, where crystals or crystal bowls are used to create sounds of healing and relaxation. The crystalline sounds carry Reiki energy deep into the body to enhance the relaxation process. Tension is released and the body begins to relax and respond to the Reiki energy. The crystal sounds promote deep tension release in the very cells of the body to create stress reduction from within. Crystal bowls are available in different sizes and can be tuned to any note desired - flats, sharps, or pure tones. Another method of Reiki stress management is through healing drumming. Healing drumming introduces Reiki energy to a person's body by the use of a drum beat. The drumming helps to create a deep, relaxing state as stress is relieved. There is a deep connection between the physical body, spiritual being, and the mind. Stress affects all three in a negative way. Using Reiki techniques for stress management is one way a person can lead a more relaxed, peaceful life.

How To Use Reiki Symbols

It seems that every year more and more Reiki symbols are being discovered and used.

This can be exciting – especially for the person who ‘channels’ them – but care must be taken. It is easy to miss the substance for the form.

Symbols help you focus and maybe even tap into a certain energetic vibration; but they are not the energy itself. They are a passageway to the energy – nothing more, nothing less.

It would therefore be a mistake to grow obsessed by them, because when we examine things closely, universal energy (rei – ki) is always the same. And it is this universal energy that does the healing, not the symbol.

One potential pitfall for those obsessed by symbols is that they end up working very hard during their Reiki treatments. They keep focusing on the symbols, they keep trying to force more and more energy through them, and in the process they forget to empty themselves and become a clear channel.

Think of it like a garden hose: when it is untangled with nothing inside (stones and junk etc.), then the water flows thick and fast. This is akin to opening yourself up and letting whatever may be, be.

When we try to force the issue, however, when we put a lot of ourselves into the healing, then it’s as if there are rocks and pebbles and other such things stuck in the hose. All of these things impede the flow of water (or, in our case, energy).

So let’s not get carried away by our symbols. If we need to use them, focus on them for a few moments and then let them go. That way you can derive benefit from them while still remaining an open channel.

Otherwise you will be straining hard, but getting meager results.

Reiki - Weave Life Force Energy Into Your Day

Reiki can be easily integrated into many aspects of your daily life allowing you to benefit from the relaxing and healing properties of life force energy. In my article, Reiki - Woven Into the Spiritual Fabric of Your Life, I outlined simple Reiki Techniques to start your day, but when you get to work, there are many more opportunities to do Reiki:

  • Make a Reiki symbol card by drawing all the Reiki symbols to which you have been attuned on a piece of paper or a file card. I did this on my computer by drawing the symbols on paper and scanning into the computer. Then print the symbols on a business card and place it out of site around your work space. You can put one under your keyboard, in your file cabinet or on the back of your wall calendar.
  • Use Reiki symbols as passwords for online accounts, you will be typing them each time you login.
  • Place a mini Reiki crystal grid on your desk, at work, in a very attractive box. Keep a picture on your crystal grid at home so when you charge it, the one at work is also filled with Reiki energy.
  • Give your self Reiki during your work day, when appropriate. You can place your hand on your leg and give yourself Reiki often, if you have that intention.
  • Draw or place a Reiki symbol card in your checkbook. You can also take a copy of your bank and credit card statements and draw symbols on them or make a bundle out of them, place a Reiki symbol card in the bundle; placing it in a sacred spot in your home. We live in an infinite universe; it's natural for us to experience abundance, including financial abundance, in our lives. The more abundance we attract in to our own lives the more we raise the level of receiving for everyone. Let Reiki help you achieve your life's purpose.
  • Put Reiki symbols in your wallet.
  • Carry crystals and wear crystal jewelry charge with Reiki.

Be creative, you will be surprised how many ways you can be a channel for Reiki energy.
  • Draw symbols or place Reiki Symbol cards behind the pictures on your walls and the books on the shelves in your home.
  • If it is practical, draw symbols on your water filter. Mine has a symbol card and crystals charged with Reiki in the casing. You will notice the difference in the taste of the water and you will have a constant source of Reiki water.
  • Draw Reiki symbols on cedar blocks and place them around the room when you are doing Reiki or when you are sleeping. You can turn them face down if you don't want your clients to see them. Cedar is traditionally known as a sacred wood. You will feel the energy as you put them around the room before a Reiki session and the smell of the cedar will enhance the environment.
  • Place crystals charge with Reiki into the potted plants in and around your home. My plants began to flourish after receiving this wonderful healing energy of crystals and Reiki. Place photos of the crystals and the plants on your Reiki crystal grid.
  • When leaving my house, before I close the front door, I draw a Reiki symbol to leave in the house until I return. It isn't necessary to draw symbols, you can visualize them or even just think of them and the energy becomes activated.
  • If you are a Reiki master, give yourself attunements regularly. I do every Sunday morning as soon as I get up.

Here are a few more very effective techniques you can do almost anywhere:
  • In nearly every situation you can draw symbols and send Reiki with your eyes. It is said that your eyes are the window to your soul so when you use them to send Reiki, it is your soul that is purely channeling and sending Reiki and it is your soul which is also receiving the healing energy.
  • Intend to send Reiki. Think Reiki. When we think, our thoughts take form, so just by thinking Reiki you activate the Reiki energy in your brain and start the flow. When we receive attunements, symbols are placed in our head and our brain. The images of the Reiki symbols are stored there; so that without any other physical action we can think and send Reiki. It's our intention which is the driving force behind the energy and the movement to its destination. Reiki energy is like water flowing down in a bubbling stream; going where it is needed, following the path of least resistance.
  • When you shake hands with someone or hug someone give them Reiki. You can easily intend for Reiki to flow into your hands and allow the person with whom you are making contact to receive a touch of Reiki energy.
  • Be Reiki. Pick the Reiki symbol most appropriate for you at the time and imagine you are that Reiki symbol. Experience the energy of the symbol first hand. When you are done, send the symbol back to the universe and come back into your body.
  • When sending Reiki long distance, imagine the person or situation to which you are intending to send the Reiki small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, hold that imagine between your two hands and send Reiki. I feel very intense energy when I do this and have been told afterwards, by the people receiving, that they experienced very effective healing experiences.
  • The more Reiki you do, the better. Weave Reiki into the fabric of your life and you will notice it become richer and stronger. Activate the sacred and experience the divine.

And so it is...

Reiki Protection Sphere

I this developed for a friend who was concerned about
protection and to keep negative energies away
. It uses the
Reiki symbols and makes a sphere of energy around you. The
technique is easy to do and tends to work well. Other uses
are to set the sphere and meditate inside it, or to do the
sphere prior to doing treatments. This is not a Traditional
Reiki Technique, but one that I developed and find useful.

To set the sphere: Connect to the Reiki Energy. Draw the Cho
Ku Rei to the six directions around your body (north, south,
east, west, up and down. Next Draw a large Dai Ko Mio the
length of your body. Draw the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen above your
head to place the sphere in all times and places, and
finally draw the Sei Hei Ki on the third eye and the heart
to free you from fear. Finish by stating your intent for the
sphere (that it protect, and remove fears) and let the reiki
flow into the sphere into the three circles connecting the
Cho Ku Rei's.

One of my favorite uses of the sphere is to use it to send
loving energy to those who are ask for distant healing.
Construct the sphere and then meditate in the sphere. Use
whatever distant healing technique that you feel comfortable
with and send loving energy. Using this sphere can also be a
wonderful way to release your own negative emotions and
stress.

Five Ways to Strengthen Your Reiki Energy

ntroduction

Wouldn't it be nice if there were a few simple tricks for strengthening your connection to Reiki energy? Things that didn't take much effort but could have an immediate effect?

This article explores five simple ways to do just that. Undoubtedly there are many more, but these five all have the virtue of being available to anyone at any time, at any Reiki skill level.

Technique 1: Dry Bathing (Kenyoku Ho)

Although this is by far the most complex energy 'trick' of the five, it is still relatively simple. Doing it before each Reiki session will definitely make a difference to the flow of energy.

Method:

Put your right hand on your left shoulder, breathe into your hara (i.e. the 2nd chakra - located about 5cm below your belly button), and sweep diagonally - exhaling forcefully - across the front of your body down to your right hip.

(By 'sweep', we mean brushing your hand over your body as if you were 'sweeping' dust away from your shoulder, past your hip and onto the ground.)

Put your left hand on your right shoulder, inhale into your hara, and 'sweep' - exhaling - down to your left hip.

Put your hand back on your left shoulder, inhale, and sweep your hand - exhaling - down to your right hip.

Extend your left arm out in front of your body, palm facing upwards, arm horizontal to the ground. Put your right hand on your left shoulder - inhale into your hara - and 'sweep' along your arm - exhaling - all the way past the left fingertips.

Repeat the process on your opposite side by extending your right hand palm facing upwards in front of your body (arm horizontal to the ground), placing your left hand on your right shoulder, inhaling into your hara, and sweeping along your right arm - exhaling - all the way past the right fingertips.

Extend your left arm out in front of your body, palm facing upwards, arm horizontal to the ground. Put your right hand on your left shoulder - inhale into your hara - and 'sweep' along your arm - exhaling - all the way past the left fingertips.

Let your arms hang down by the sides of your body and feel any energetic currents that may arise (most probably in your arms and hands).

Gassho (join your hands together in prayer position [namaste] in front of your chest) and give thanks.

Technique 2: Rubbing Hands Together

Rub your hands together vigorously for ten seconds before giving yourself or another Reiki. This will stimulate the energetic channels in your hand, thus making it easier for the Reiki energy to flow.

Technique 3: Keep Fingers Together and Hands Cupped

Reiki will generally flow more strongly if you keep your fingers together (although the thumb may, at times, separate from the other fingers).

Mrs Takata, the founder of Western Reiki, apparently proclaimed: 'Scattered hands, scattered energy'. She was right, although you should naturally never be dogmatic (sometimes, after all, you may in fact desire a more spread out sort of energy).

That said, 9 times out of 10 you will feel more if you keep your fingers together.

The same can also be said for keeping your hands held cupped rather than flat on the body. The reasons for this are not exactly clear, but try it if you are not already doing so. The energy almost always seem to flow better.

Technique 4: Hover Above Each Hand Position Before Touching The Body

A good way to get a stronger connection to each Reiki position is to hover above it with your hands before lowering them onto the body.

The trick is to wait until you get an energetic connection and only then put your hands on the body. For some reason this makes it easier to connect to the Reiki energy of each position.

Technique 5: Keep One Hand On The Body When Changing Hand Positions

To keep the energetic connection going (and build momentum, thus strengthening it), it is a good idea not to take both hands off your body when changing positions (the same applies when you give Reiki to someone else).

Keep one hand grounded while you move the other. Then anchor the one you have moved, and move the one you had kept grounded. That way the energetic space and connection you have established is not short-circuited.

Reiki Guides

Reiki is fast gaining popularity as a method for healing and gaining wisdom by connecting forces with the Divine. Reiki can be loosely defined channeling Universal Light for the purpose of healing the self or others. Though the original system of Reiki does not point towards the appearance of spirit guides, many a time this Light also brings with it a spiritual energy in the form of a guide who many call a spirit guide, a Reiki guide or even angelic guides depending on their spiritual inclinations.

A spirit guide is different from a spirit, when you are performing Reiki you are not channeling spirits but because of the high amounts of Spiritual Energy generated that is directed towards a positive purpose like healing, spirits who assist in such purposes may stage an appearance. These spirits are not just spirits invoked in shamanistic rituals but these are spirits who work as guides, advisors or spiritual counselors. The ancient Shinto religion features Divine Spirits called Kami who inhabit this world and are a part of each and every thing in this world like the elements and even intangible qualities like joy, fertility etc. however the system of Reiki started by Dr. Usui Mikao did not include any aspects of Shintoism that had to do with working with these spirits or Kami. Thus even though originally this Japanese tradition did not work with spirit guides, their presence started becoming favorable to the process of Reiki and during the 80’s and the 90’s with the coming of the new-age spiritual revolution, Reiki systems also began incorporating spirit guides often calling them as Reiki guides. However Reiki techniques such as Byosen Ho and Reiji Ho help the practitioner develop intuitive abilities that are a gateway to astral wisdom and connecting with spirit guides.

Though these guides are astral spirits that can be present in a Reiki session and guide a healer to know things about the patient for example, while working with certain patients it may become difficult to figure out the correct approach, work on a specific site of blockage etc and this is where a spirit guide can come in to guide the healer and this in turn boosts the power of Reiki to bring about great results and higher healing.

It is not that an initiate at the second level will magically start to communicate with sprit guides, it takes practice and perseverance and to develop intuitive abilities to sense spirit guides through Reiki techniques like Byosen Ho and Reiji Ho. It is not an easy process but certainly not impossible if you learn to listen to the voice that resides inside of you. This voice is constantly talking but the noise from the mind drowns it out, keenly listening to the voice of your heart is a tool of power that is always with you. This voice can guide you like no other spirit can and it is vital to heed its call and this is what can be developed by using the aforementioned Reiki techniques.

Constantly honing your skills and practicing Reiki with faith and understanding can lead to some wonderful experiences with yourself – your own inner work and also share wisdom with spirit guides.

The Five Building Blocks of Traditional Japanese Reiki

Over the past ten years, the world of Western Reiki has undergone rapid change. In fact, not since Iris Ishikuro disobeyed Mrs Takata by making the Master Level commonly available has anything of the like happened (Mrs Takata had decreed US $10,000 to be the going rate for the course, thus putting it out of most people's reach).

While there are several plausible reasons for this change - the advent of the Web, a growing number of teachers etc. - the principal cause is almost certainly the rediscovery of Reiki's Japanese heritage. This has led many practitioners to question much that was previously taken as 'gospel', and delve more deeply into a practice they soon learnt was not just a healing system, but also a way of life.

The Problem with Western Reiki

The Reiki almost everyone practices in the West was passed on - in one way or another - from Mrs Takata (a student of Dr Hayashi who, in turn, was a student of Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki). Her style of Reiki has proven a great success and helped millions of people around the world. This is indisputable.

But is it true to Usui's original system of Reiki? And, more importantly, is it as effective as what Usui originally taught?

The answer, I believe, is 'no', and the reason is that Mrs Takata focused too much on the healing component of Reiki. For her Reiki was - at least primarily - a hands-on healing technique; while for Mikao Usui it was something much grander: a path to Enlightenment.

Before I elaborate on this point, it should be noted that the difference in emphasis is not surprising given the way Mrs Takata and Mikao Usui found Reiki. Mikao Usui arrived at Reiki after a life of meditation, martial arts and (Tendai) Buddhism; Mrs Takata found it after she sought a solution to several life threatening health problems.

As a result, Usui saw Reiki in the context of Buddhism (and hence, Enlightenment); and Mrs Takata saw Reiki in the context of healing. It is therefore only to be expected that the way they taught Reiki differed substantially.

The Five Building Blocks of Reiki

Reiki, as taught by Usui, consisted of five principal parts:

  • Attunements
  • Healing
  • Mantras and Symbols
  • Traditional meditation techniques
  • Reiki precepts

All five parts are seen to work symbiotically together: one part strengthening the other in a bid - ultimately - to find Enlightenment.

In Western Reiki (as taught by Mrs Takata) many of the five components are either lost or greatly weakened. They all exist, sure, but the emphasis - as we have explained - is on the healing. Everything else is useful only insomuch as it helps this.

The Quest for Enlightenment

Since Reiki, for Usui, was not principally about healing (in fact, he only bothered teaching hands on healing in the last few years of his life!), then it is worth examining how it fits in with the goal of Enlightenment . In particular, it is useful to re-examine the five building blocks of Reiki to see how traditional Usui Reiki differs in emphasis from that handed down by Mrs Takata.

The Attunements

The attunements are for the most part used in a similar way in both Western and Japanese Reiki. Their purpose is to connect the aspiring practitioner to Reiki energy. The principal difference is that in Japanese Reiki the attunements (reiju) are not a one off thing. Rather, they are performed over and over again to help maintain one's connection to the Reiki energy.

In fact, in Usui's time, it was even common practice to perform reijus each time Reiki practitioners met as a group.

Healing

As we have already said, healing for Usui was not so much an end in itself as a path to Enlightenment. Through healing you entered into a deep meditative state that led to a closer connection with the true Self.

That is not to say that the healing component wasn't valued. After all, Usui himself spent much time healing people (sometimes even doing so for days on end - for instance after the 1923 Tokyo earthquake). The point is simply that healing was of secondary importance. It was the spiritual state of an individual that truly mattered.

Not surprisingly, Japanese healing sessions tend to be much more intuitive as a result, since the emphasis on the meditative element makes them less 'heady' than their Western equivalent.

As a rule, there are no set positions, with a practitioner moving intuitively from one place to the next (unlike the method Mrs Takata taught which involves students using a set of fixed hand positions).

Mantras and Symbols

In Western Reiki, the mantras and symbols are primarily used to strengthen healing. If the practitioner feels that more energy is needed on a certain part of a patient's body, for instance, the Power Symbol can be drawn to intensify the Reiki energy. The mantras and symbols are generally used together - the mantras being repeated after the symbols are drawn.

In Japanese Reiki the symbols have a role of lesser importance. Indeed, the best way to describe them - according to Frans Stiene - would be something like 'training wheels'. While a beginner practitioner has a less reliable (or weaker) connection to the Reiki energy they will be used; but as soon as the practitioner has learnt to embody the energy of the symbols they will be let go of.

Furthermore, the symbols are used more for the practitioner's sake than the client's. They are not drawn on the client so that he or she can receive 'more energy'. Rather, they are drawn by the practitioner so that she, herself, can better embody their energy.

Another key difference between the two Reiki systems is that in Japanese Reiki the mantras are often used on their own. They are generally chanted with the aim of strengthening certain energy centres (for instance the CKR mantra - that is pronounced slightly differently to normal - bolsters the hara, or second chakra).

Students will spend months - maybe even years - chanting these mantras, working their way from one to the next only when their teacher deems them ready for the next one.

Traditional Meditation Techniques

As a rule, traditional Western Reiki neglects meditation practice. Sometimes meditation techniques involving the visualization of the Reiki symbols are taught, and students are usually encouraged to be in a meditative state when practising Reiki; but systematic meditation is seldom part of Western Reiki.

For Usui, on the contrary, meditation was a genuine cornerstone upon which Reiki developed. Using particular meditation techniques - in particular breathing into the hara - students learnt to focus their mind, strengthen their energy and merge with the true Self.

Since Reiki - as we have said - was for Usui a path to Enlightenment, then moving more deeply within oneself was the most important thing one could do. As such, it is hardly surprising that Usui taught meditation for many years before teaching the healing component of Reiki.

Healing the body is great, for sure; but healing the mind (through meditation) is more important still.

Reiki Precepts

The Reiki precepts are taught in both Western and Japanese Reiki and, to some extent, are important to both. The main difference between the two systems is how they are used.

While in Western Reiki the precepts are often understood on an intellectual level, Japanese Reiki aims to understand them in a more intuitive, non-rational way. Practitioners meditate on them, trying to understand with the 'gut', not the head. In this way, it is hoped, they can more fully embody the principles (in both actions and spirit).

When the principles are understood with the head alone, students will generally find that they do not greatly influence their actions.

Conclusion

Due to the multiple developmental influences on Western Reiki - for instance, Indian, Tibetan and Egyptian to name just a few - it is impossible to make any statements that are valid for all of its forms.

That said, it is nevertheless true that on the whole, Japanese Reiki is principally a path to Enlightenment, while Western Reiki is a path to healing. This, it could be argued, is the main difference between the two systems.

(Note: This discussion should be seen as a general one. In other words, as accurate as it will often prove to be, many Reiki practitioners and systems will not conform to the 'norm'.)
